Blackjack, formerly known as Vingt-Un and Black Jack, is the
American version of the European card game called Twenty-One, which has many
derivatives. Among these derivatives, the most popular is the slot machine
game. Blackjack, or black jack, as it is commonly referred to in America, is a
card game in which the player bets the amount of money that he possesses on the
cards that are put into the slot machine. The object of the game is to
"buy out" the slot machine with the amount of money that was wagered,
at the end of the playing session.
In its earliest years, black jack was largely a game enjoyed by
men, especially young men. It was a favored pastime for many businessmen, and
it was often a source of profit for those whose professions required them to
travel. The railroads and steamship companies would often send men to Atlantic
cities to play black jack, which was a welcome break from their regular work
schedules. The advent of the transcontinental railroad changed the face of
black jack, too, as it brought an entirely new set of players to the table.
With the growth of the railroad industry, the demand for black jack gambling
sites grew, and it was no longer reserved for the rich or the powerful.
In the English language, however, black jack is referred to as
simply "the game of chance" (a favorite expression of cartoon
character W.C. Pounder), while Japan refers to it as "the game of five
cards." Some variations of the game have been altered over time; for
example, in Japan, the player draws one card from the dealt deck, and that card
is inserted in the slot. If that card is an Ace, the player wins. The exact
history of the game of black jack, however, is far more interesting than the
simple-minded game of chance.
It all started in 18agles, a city on the Pacific Ocean. A
Japanese businessman by the name of Tezuka opened the first "taiseki"
or tea house in Tokyo and soon afterward began playing the game with his
friends. The popularity of the game was such that Tezuka opened two more teak
restaurants in different parts of Japan, one in Sendai, and one in Niigata.
These early establishments quickly became legendary, and their proximity to
tourist venues such as the Imperial Palace and the Tokyo Tower contributed to
their phenomenal success. Today, you can visit any of these teak restaurants
for a truly unique and wonderful taste of the Japanese teahouse culture.
In the English language, however, the name of the game of
blackjack is not referred to as "taiseki" or tea house. Instead, it
is called "pintake" or "mini-bar." However, the meaning of
the word is somehow related to the teak buildings in which the game is played.
So, even if you refer to it as a mini-bar, I would like to suggest that you do
not imply any association with drinking beer from a tap.
There are many similarities between the story of 파워볼사다리 and the
story of Black Jack. Both are set in the city of Sendai in Japan; both involve
small boys (the main characters of the story) who are thrown into an
underground game and forced to fight their way out. Also, both series involve
escape through the underground tunnels. Lastly, both involve the use of a pinot
grigio that changes color when it is poured into a glass. If you are looking
for a similar manga that I would recommend is volume 8 of the Black Jack manga,
which comes out later this summer.
